*Homework subject to change depending on the needs of the students.*
Homework Policy: Fourth grade students are required to have a least 40 minutes of homework per night. This comes from Stoughton Public Schools.
Nightly homework usually consists of a Math worksheet, math facts mastery practice, independent reading, and a spelling packet. More homework could be added depending on the needs of the students. As we get more into the year, I will send home a packet on Fridays which will be due the next Friday so you and your child can get ahead for the week. Please note MCAS homework/practice will be added as we begin preparations.
Book reports and/or research projects have timelines to support time management and due dates are given ahead of time. Please help your child to plan ahead and support them in their project to help them with their success.
Tests will have study guides to help your child prepare for the assessment.
Maintaining Skills at Home with homework:
Responsibility, independence and organization are the focus areas. Use these skills at home to your benefit. Maintain a routine with the homework and school schedule. If you need help with this, I will be glad to sit down with you and set this up. One of your child's September homework assignments is to find a homework spot. Once they pick it, keep it there and have all their supplies handy. It is also a good idea two containers or trays( shirt boxes work well too) for your child to sort their work nightly. One tray for papers that stay home, and the other one for papers to come back to school. Any papers that have long term assignments with due dates, hang them on the fridge or wall.
One of the most difficult parts of homework is not completing it but bringing it back!!!! As soon as your child has completed the assignment, have them place it in their homework folder, in their binder, in their bag the night before. Also, be sure to check they did and have them pack a water, a snack and needed money for lunch or their lunch. I have found from past experience that the night before pack up and check list gives your child the confidence they need to know they are prepared for school. It also is a huge supporter of lowering anxieties.
MOM tip: Never ever do homework after 7:00 PM. My own experience with my angel proves it to be a terrible idea! Plan accordingly to get it done before.
Be sure to sign their agenda book nightly, correct work and clean out the binder, folder and bag nightly. With this team work, we will build study skills that will last a lifetime. Remember it will take work.
